After seemingly months of protracted negotiations, it seems as though Manchester United are finally going to land Chelsea man Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian’s days at Stamford Bridge appeared numbered – for the second time – when Chelsea opted to sign Monaco starlet Tiemoue Bakayoko this summer.

United, on the other hand, have been on the look out for a defensive midfielder that would hopefully free up Paul Pogba to influence the game further up the pitch.

It seemed as though boss Jose Mourinho wanted to be reunited with Matic and was willing to £40 million to make the deal happen, and now he may have finally gotten his wish.

It is believed that both Man United’s and Chelsea’s pursuit of Romelu Lukaku earlier this summer played a part in delaying this deal, but now that Chelsea have ended up with Alvaro Morata it seems as though tensions have eased.

However, it was still hard to believe that Chelsea would actively strengthen one of their main title rivals by selling them a key member of their title winning campaign.

But that is exactly what will transpire in the coming days and Kaveh Solhekol believes Matic may make his debut against Real Madrid on August 8.

So why are Chelsea allowing the deal to happen? According to Solhekol, Matic turned down Juventus because he wants to play for Mourinho again and because he played such a big role in them winning two of the last three Premier League titles, they are granting his wish as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

Earlier this month, Mourinho said that he was looking to add two more players to his squad.

“I’m happy with my squad but I would like to have two more players, I never hide that, one player a midfield player would give me more options to the balance and the team,” he said.

“Another one an attacking player, especially that can play through the wings to give me more attacking options but I never speak about players that belong to other teams.

“I don’t like if any manager comes and would say he would like one of my players, that’s not correct. I would like two more players but probably I only get one.”
